“Ever since my mother turned ninety, none
of us has truly had a full night’s sleep.”
This was the concern shared by Ms. Cheung,
who lives with her elderly mother, when she first contacted us. Although the
90-year-old grandmother was still able to walk slowly with a walker, her
long-term hypertension and diabetes made her physical condition particularly
fragile.
Even with the support of a domestic helper
during the day, the family continued to face significant pressure at night due
to frequent repositioning, diaper changes, and occasional attempts by the
elderly mother to go to the bathroom on her own. Ms. Cheung explained that even
the sound of the walker touching the floor at night would immediately wake her
up, as she constantly worried about the risk of falls in the dark.
After arranging a 12-hour overnight
caregiver service, the family’s caregiving pressure
gradually began to ease.
YDCare arranged overnight caregiver support
for the elderly client. Due to her chronic medical conditions, the caregiver’s first priority during each shift was to monitor basic vital signs.
For elderly individuals with chronic conditions such as hypertension and
diabetes, nighttime can be a high-risk period for blood pressure and blood
sugar fluctuations. The caregiver performed regular monitoring and maintained
detailed records for follow-up medical consultations.
As the client also experienced dry skin
related to aging and diabetes, the caregiver provided routine skin care
support, including scheduled moisturizing care to help maintain skin integrity
and reduce the risk of skin damage caused by dryness.
During diaper changes and bathroom
assistance, the caregiver applied proper transfer and mobility support
techniques while assisting with the walker, helping reduce the risk of
nighttime falls and improving overall safety during movement.
Following the introduction of overnight
care support, the family’s caregiving routine became noticeably more stable.
With sufficient rest at night, the domestic helper was better able to manage
daytime caregiving responsibilities. Ms. Cheung was also finally able to sleep
more peacefully without constantly waking up in fear of accidents.
At the same time, the elderly client’s skin
condition remained stable, with no skin breakdown caused by prolonged bed rest
or dryness. Most importantly, the family was reassured by the continued “zero
fall” outcome throughout the night care period.
For many families, overnight caregiver
support is not only about ensuring elderly safety, but also about relieving the
long-term physical and emotional burden of caregiving.
